Property
White or a little buff fine crystal. The relative molecular weight is 69.0 and density is 2.168. It is unscented with a little saline taste, easy to be deliquescenced and to dissolve in water. It can be slowly oxidized into sodium nitrite in the air, and become diamino compound composed with ammonia under low temperature.
Applicationroperty
It is mainly used as the production raw material of nitro-compound and azo dyes, etc. It is also used as mordant and bleacher for fabric dyeing, as well as metal heat treatment agent, early-strength admixture and antifreeze of cement.

Powder shape:
Physical properties
White to light yellow granular, rod or powder. It is hygroscopic. It is soluble in 1.5 parts of cold water, 0.6 parts of boiling water, and slightly soluble in ethanol. The relative density is 2.17. The melting point is 271°C.
Chemical properties
Its aqueous solution is alkaline, is a strong oxidant and has reducing properties,
It will gradually oxidize in the air, and the surface will become sodium nitrate, which can be decomposed by heating to 320℃ or higher, and it can also be oxidized by the oxidant; it will liberate brown nitrogen dioxide gas when it meets weak acid; contact with organic matter and reducing agent can cause explosion or combustion. It also emits toxic and irritating nitrogen oxide gas; it can also be oxidized when exposed to strong oxidants, especially ammonium salts, such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium persulfate, etc., which can interact with each other to generate high heat at room temperature and cause combustibles to burn. It is oxidizing. It can burn and explode in contact with organic matter, and emit toxic and irritating nitrogen peroxide and nitrogen oxide gases.
Sodium nitrite is toxic, with a half-lethal dose (rats, oral) 180mg/kg [1]. There are rumors that sodium nitrite is a carcinogen, but in fact sodium nitrite is not a carcinogen. The carcinogen is sodium nitrite. Nitrosamines generated under certain conditions, in the sodium nitrite molecule, the valence of nitrogen is +3. It is an intermediate compound state, which is both reducing and oxidizing. For example, it can oxidize KI to elemental iodine in an acidic solution.
